Unix II - Advanced Unix

This course assumes comfortable prior knowledge of Unix atleast at an intermediate level, since it builds on the concepts of the Basic to Intermediate track.

•* Power User Command line shortcuts - how to work on the command line faster and efficiently.

•* DataCenter Study – Data Center design is studied, how the essential services are glued in, 6 different models of DC organization based on business models are explored.

•* Services - How the system responds and organises tcp and udp based service protocols.

•* The Super Server - Inetd, xinetd configuration and various supported services

•* Process Priorities and how to change them

•* Networking

–- How to create a basic network and tools used in networking.

–- Various protocols used – UDP, TCP/IP, ICMP

–- CIDR - history, need, design principals and subnetting.

- Other networking concepts.

* •Controlling user acces using Sudo - Complete configuration of Sudo.
*Examples of file “sudoers” entries in the corporate world.

•* Setting up NFS and its uses.

•* Suid / sgid - the need, how to setup, services that depend on these, common mistakes, how to avoid them.

•* Tools - Rsync , dd

•* System Log configuration - Syslog & Loghost

•* Automounter configuration - AutoFS

•* SSH Basics

•* Configuring passwordless SSH and Rsh

•* Performance Tuning – sar, vmstat, troubleshooting a loaded system and other tools used.

* Exercises - The whole course is mostly hands-on.

Course Duration: 6-7 weeks, 11.00 am -2.00 pm Sat & weekday 7-9pm, twice a week. This course runs for 50 hours in total.
